Archery

The sport comes with a history of over 10,000 years – a timeline consistent with the discovery of the bow & arrow for the very first time. First developed as a competitive sport in England, it is today practiced in over 140 countries. Archery made its Olympic debut in 1900, but then went through a half a century hiatus before making a comeback at the Munch games in 1972. Archers are required to shoot at a target measuring 122cm in diameter, divided into ten concentric circles from a distance of 70m.

Rules of Archery – Explained

Athletics

The single largest sport at the Olympics, Athletics consists of track, field and road events. The track for the Olympic athletic event is a 400m oval and all track events finish at the same line – at the end of the home stretch. Consisting of sprints, middle-distance and long-distance events for men and women, athletics are at its very heart the most primal test of human endurance, speed and athleticism. The 100m sprint for men is often the most awaited and showpiece event of any Olympic games, that makes the winner, arguably, the fastest individual on the planet.

Story of an Olympic Champion – Carolina Marin
Badminton Olympic Draw

Boxing

One of the sport that featured in the ancient Olympic games of the 7th Century BC, boxing features two players squaring off against each other in a ring with the objective of landing more blows on the opponents’ body & torso. While, in the ancient times each match would go on until one of the opponents was beaten into unconsciousness, the modern version evolved to honour physical strength as well as the courage of the participants in a more civilized and respectful manner. The sport is immensely popular worldwide, and has featured at all modern Olympic games since 1904, with just the exception of the 1912 Stockholm games. Tokyo will feature boxing in five weight divisions, but will no longer allow amateur fighters to participate.

Equestrian

Equestrian has been part of the Olympic movement for well over a century. It first featured at the 1900 Paris Games, while made an official debut at the 1912 Stockholm edition. To succeed at the equestrian event one must have both a skilled individual, as well as a skilled-horse with a perfect synchronisation between the two. The sport features three events – dressage, jumping, and eventing, in both individual and team iterations. Dressage is the more artistic of the three, while eventing is considered to be the triathlon of the sport.

Golf

Golf featured at the 1900 Paris games and was included for the following 1904 Summer Olympics, but then disappeared for well over 100 years to then make a return at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The sport is conducted over two broad formats - the match-play and the stroke-play, however, however at the Olympics only the stroke play option will be featured. Golf is a complex and technically very demanding sport, with varied factors such as weather and the nature of the course playing a huge role in determining the outcome of the event.

Gymnastics

One of the three gymnastic disciplines at the Olympics, Artistic Gymnastics requires the athletes to perform routines on an apparatus and are judged for their accuracy and difficulty of the performance. The sport has been part of the Olympic games from the very first iteration of the modern games in 1896. Male athletes compete in six events - floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bars, while female athletes do so in four of them - vault, uneven bars, beam and floor. Judo

While the word judo in itself – the gentle way, there is nothing quite as gentle about the sport itself. In a full-on combat and contact sport, the primary objective of the participants is to take an opponent to the ground. The opponent can be subdued by being pinned to the ground or can be forced to quit with a choke or a hold. First featured at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the 2021 addition will return to the Nippon Budokan - the venue for its first Olympic iteration. The sport will feature individual as well as team events across various weight categories.
